Hobo Burger Packets

This idea comes from our good friend Tim!! We went to his place for a BBQ with his family a couple of weeks ago and he was throwing these guys on the grill and I couldn’t wait to try it myself. They are so easy and everyone, including the 17 month old, in the house LOVES them!! They are super easy and perfect for the grill. These would also be easy to do in the oven. I think this is the perfect summer or winter meal!! It is also a great recipe because you can change it up however you like, for instance add some crispy bacon after its done cooking!! It’s the best burger and NO BUNS!! Enjoy!

Hobo Burger Packets

Serves: 4

Time: 15 min prep, 20-30 minutes on grill

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Ground Beef (preferably grass-fed), made into 4 patties
  • 2-3 Sweet Potato’s, or 6-8 small red potatoes, diced
  • 1/2 Vidalia onion, diced
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Slice of Sharp Cheddar Cheese, (or Crumbled Blue Cheese would be yummy too:)
  • 4 large squares of Tin Foil

Place a square of tin foil on your work space and spray with olive oil (I use a Misto) or brush with olive oil. Place on hamburger patty on the tin foil, layer on a handful of potatoes, and less than a 1/4c of diced onions. Sprinkle with salt & pepper, and garlic powder. Close up the tin foil, trying not to leave any holes. Continue until four packets are made. Cook packets on a hot grill for about 10-15 minutes per side. Flipping once. You want to give the potatoes enough time to cook through. When the packets are done, doing this quickly, open a packet and place your cheese on top of the inside food, quickly then close the packet back up to let the cheese melt!! Open and serve!! I like to serve them in the pouches, makes it more fun.

These Hobo packets would be an AWESOME camping meal too!! Perfect to throw on a grate over the fire pit!! YUM!!!

Hope you Enjoy!!!

  1. Mmmm…. my mom used to make ‘Washday Dinners’, basically a pasty in foil minus the pasty crust…. Looking at this made my tastebuds do a flashback! I’ll have to try this version, too!
